An engineer, a professor, and a lawyer were being interviewed for a position as chief executive officer of a large corporation. The engineer was interviewed first, and was asked a long list of questions, ending with "How much is two plus two?" The engineer excused himself, and made a series of measurements and calculations before returning to the board room and announcing, "Four." The professor was next interviewed, and was asked the same questions. Before answering the last question, he excused himself, made for the library, and did a great deal of research. After a contemplation, he also announced "Four." The lawyer was interviewed last, and was asked the same questions. Before answering the last question, he drew all the shades in the room, looked outside the door to see if anyone was there, checked the telephone for listening devices, and asked "How much do you want it to be?" 엔지니어와 대학 교수, 그리고 변호사가 한 대기업의 CEO가 되기 위한 면접 시험을 치렀다. 엔지니어가 먼저 면접시험을 봤는데 긴 질문서가 제시됐고, 맨 마지막에 “2+2는 얼마입니까” 하는 질문이 주어졌다. 그는 이사회에 양해를 구하고 나서 일련의 측정과 계산을 마친 후에 “4”라는 답안을 제출했다. 다음 타자로 나선 대학 교수도 똑같은 질문을 받았다. 마지막 답을 내기 전에 그 역시 양해를 구하고 나서 도서관으로 뛰어가 많은 양의 연구를 수행하고 난 뒤 깊이 숙고한 끝에 “4”라고 대답했다. 변호사가 마지막으로 면접에 나서 그 역시 똑 같은 질문을 받았다. 마지막 질문에 답하기 전에 그는 방 안에 있는 모든 가림막을 내리고 밖에 누가 있는 지 창 밖을 살피고 난 후 전화기에 혹시 도청 장치가 돼 있는 지 확인한 다음, 이사회에 “얼마로 해 주면 되겠어요?”하고 되물었다.
