9일 표창원 전 교수는 자신의 블로그에 ‘표창원 박사논문 인용오류 관련 지도교수의 1차회신’이라는 글을 올렸다.
이 회신에서 표 전 교수의 지도교수는 “‘간접인용’과 ‘직접인용’ 사이를 구분하는 선은 매우 얇다”며 “논문에서 발견된 인용오류를 수정하기 위해서, ‘정오표’를 만들어 제출하거나 온란인 상 논문을 수정하는 것으로 충분하다고 판단된다.”고 밝혔다.
특히 “네 학위에 문제가 발생하지는 않을 것으로 생각된다(I would be surprised if it affected the legitimacy of your degree.)”라고 답해 이번 사건이 학위를 취소할 만한 일은 아니라는 견해를 보였다.

제가 보낸 이메일에 대해 오늘 오전 지도교수가 아래와 같이 1차 회신을 보내오셨습니다. 곧 대학측의 공식 답변을 주겠다고 하십니다.
“너의 박사학위 논문은 대학 규정에 따라 2명의 심사위원(대학 내부 1인, 대학 외부 1인)에 의해 심사가 이루어졌다. 두 심사위원 모두 논문에 만족하고 박사학위를 수여해야 한다고 결론내렸다. 비록 최근 ‘표절 문제’가 대두되고 있지만, 주로 출처 자체를 표기하지 않는 경우 (예를 들어 타인의 저작물을 아무 인용표시 없이 가져와 기술하며 마치 자신의 것인것처럼 보이게 하는 경우)에 해당한다. 만약에, 네 논문에서 문제가 제기된 26군데에 출처표기를 했다면, 이는 “표절과는 상관없는 문제”로 보인다. 하지만, 난 이 문제를 대학 측관계자와 협의하겠다. 이는 아마 1~2 일 혹은 그 이상이 소요될 수도 있다. 하지만, 네 학위에 문제가 발생하지는 않을 것으로 생각된다. 더구나, 네 논문에 있는 ‘미디어 이론’ 소개 부분은 다른 연구자의 저작물을 요약해서 소개하는 챕터이기 때문에 원저자와 같거나 유사한 단어들이 사용된다고 해도 놀랄 일이 아니다. 짧게 말해서, ‘간접인용’과 ‘직접인용’ 사이를 구분하는 선은 매우 얇다. 난 아마도 상당수의 학자들이 이 선을 넘은적이 있을 것이라고 생각한다. 네 논문에서 발견된 인용오류를 수정하기 위해서, ‘정오표’를 만들어 제출하거나 온란인 상 논문을 수정하는 것으로 충분하다고 판단된다.
“Your thesis was examined according to university regulations by two examiners, one external and one internal. They were entirely satisfied that it was your work and that you should be awarded your PhD. Although there has been increasing concern about plagiarism in recent years (mostly with regard to first degrees rather than postgraduate ones), it has invariably been the total absence of any acknowledgement of the sources concerned i.e. using someone else’s work without any acknowledgement at all with the effect and, arguably, the intent of passing it off as one’s own. If the 26 cases you mention have references to the original sources, I hardly think it amounts to plagiarism. However, I will discuss the situation with appropriate individuals at the university and see what their opinion is, but this may take a day or two, possibly a little longer. I would be surprised if it affected the legitimacy of your degree. Moreover, bearing in mind that the ‘quotations’ concerned are in the media theory chapter, it is hardly surprising that the words used by you are the same or very similar to those used by the theorists concerned when you are summarising what they said. In short, the line between paraphrasing and quotation is very thin! I suspect most academics have inadvertently crossed that line! Should a solution be necessary, I suspect it would be no more than you providing a corrigendum on a sheet of paper to be inserted in your thesis and, should you wish, in the online version of your thesis.”
